All About ACG
Nike’s sub-brand, All Conditions Gear, commonly known as ACG, redefined sports utility for the urban athlete. Staying true to its name, ACG has a history of using Tech Fleece, Dry-Fit Wool and GORE-TEX materials to create inventive garments that perform in all climates. ACG’s success lies in the unique combination of functionality and aesthetics, a feature derived from its predecessor, Hike Nike
Hike Nike’s light-weight hiking boot and the “Stonemasters” rock climbing collective, that brought style to the rocks of Yosemite, were precursors that heavily influenced ACG gear. ACG was formally announced in ’89 with the release of two trainers and weatherproof apparel. Similar to the brand’s designs and colours, ACG adverts pushed boundaries to embody the brand’s bold and playful ethos. These edgy ads, like the '91 "Top 10 Reasons" campaign, pulled consumers off their couches and onto the trails.
With ACG’s release of the ’91 Air Mowabb, the brand began truly transforming the outdoor experience. Tinker Hatfield, designer of the all-time classic Air Mowabb, named the shoe after the terrain of Moab, Utah. A shoe that showcased the trailblazing ACG spirit, the Mowabb was the first Nike shoe to have the iconic speckled midsole. Paying attention to movement and functionality, Hatfield explained he was “thinking about how shoes work on a bike pedal, how they should work as you step on a rock and wobble a bit”.
In 2014, ACG relaunched under Nikelab with creative director Errolson Hugh. The brand underwent an immense shift when Hugh began creating futuristic techwear intended for the urbanite. Redirecting ACG towards avant-garde themes, Hugh’s designs parted from the original retro-sporty vision. In 2019, Nike sought to return balance to ACG and James Arizumi was brought on. Attention was refocused to ACG’s vibrant heritage and Arizumi has since created tactile designs for the slopes, rapids, and trails. In Arizumi’s words, the new chapter for ACG is “still based in technology”, but "gives you the tools to explore the outdoors”.
