When Tyler, the Creator Got into the Festive Spirit with the Grinch Soundtrack

There’s a reason why a handful of movies have been certified as Christmas-time classics – an essence of nostalgia, a kid-friendly narrative, occasionally a romance, but always a happy ending. Dr. Seuss’ the Grinch, however, with unique riveting rhymes and character creation, follows a different path. The Grinch – part grouch part pinch, opposes the typical storyline of Christmas. Instead of gifting presents he steals them. For years, the Grinch has been notoriously branded as the Christmas thief, bringing naughty to an otherwise nice Whoville. Perhaps, that’s why it wasn’t such a surprise when #TylerTheCreator announced he was releasing music for the 2018 remake of the movie.

Having been previously condemned for his nauseating lyrics, it’s both a stark opposition and idyllic pairing to see Tyler rap from the perspective of the Grinch. From tracks such as his 2010 ‘Fuck This Christmas’ and his 2017 track Mr. Lonely, he’s not only expressed his disdain for the holidays, but has revealed his experience of feeling like a societal outcast.

Collaborating with Illumination in 2018, the producers of the Dr. Seuss classic reboot, Tyler stepped into character and released a 6 song EP. Explaining that “Making Christmas themed music, but not too Xmassy was the goal”, Tyler seemed to hit the mark keeping both “seven-year-olds” and “parents” in mind. Free of vulgar language and laden with holiday themed titles including “Cindy Lou Who’s Wish” and “Hot Chocolate”, Tyler once again shared shocking yet sincere music with this up-tempo EP.

Navigating a new genre, Tyler paired his distinguishable rap flow with the timeless sounds of Christmas – soft pianos, synths, and sleigh bells to which he receives production credits. Including an original track “I am The Grinch”, and a remake of “You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch”, the Odd Future rapper brought a creative twist to the film, inviting an audience interested in a modern-day spin on holiday classics. An unexpected cross-over into family-friendly material, Tyler certainly showed his artistic possibilities are endless.
